The company will rent its historic soundstage to outside projects, and will also provide a new home base for many of the elite model makers and practical effects technicians of Marin County, who were previously employed by ILM and Kerner Optical.

32Ten Studios Opens in Historic ILM Kerner Site

Good GOSH!

Years ago, I wanted to get into  a couple of things. This included animation and special effects. Practical effects. The kind of effects where you built amazing models, miniatures, and such, and blew it up for the camera. I have a list of my favorite effects and needless to say, most if not all, are practical effects.

Today, it’s awesome and very uplifting to see how practical and physical construction and effects are still making an impact. I’m exceptionally excited to see 32Ten open up at the historical ILM stages in Marin County.

As for my favorite effects? They include:

  • Train destruction at the end of Back to the Future III (amazing physical model)
  • Walking Statue of Liberty in Ghostbusters 2
  • Destruction of The Unisphere at the end of Men In Black (this effect was so good, people fought with me and argued that you couldn’t see the Unisphere anymore— they blew it up for the movie. In fact, they destroyed a perfect model for the film).

I am so happy that so many amazing model artists and technicians will be able to come back into the glory of practical visual effects. ROCK ON!!
